Proper food safety training for food service workers is essential and Greene County Extension has two courses this summer to meet this need.
SafeFood is a course for restaurant and food service employees that covers fundamental food safety information. Participants receive educational materials and a thermometer.
Greene County Extension encourages those involved with Bell Tower Festival as food vendors, 4-H leaders and members who work in Clover Cafe at the Greene County Fair, farmers market vendors, and those involved in fundraising projects such as churches and civic organizations to attend the training.
The session is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Extension office, 104 W. Washington St in Jefferson. Cost is $10.
ServSafe, Food Safety Certification Course, is scheduled Tuesday, July 28, at the Extension office. The training is eight hours – 8:30 am to 4:30 pm – and meets industry standards and obligation to consumers. The program aims to provide training for restaurant and other food service managers and professionals. Participants have the option of testing for certification upon training completion.
All participants must purchase the ServSafe Essentials manual, 6th edition and successfully pass the exam in order to be certified by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Certification is valid for five years.
ServSafe fees are $100 for Iowa Restaurant Association members and $150 for non-members. The course without the certification option is $75 and participants receive seven hours of instruction, but no book or exam. Course registration is due by July 14.
